Nichole Virag Doula + Birth Photography

Hey there, I’m Nichole Virag. I’m a doula and birth photographer in Syracuse, NY!

Once upon a time, I went to college and got a Masters degree in Social Work, but here I am living my best life as a doula and birth photographer. Ten years ago, I had no idea what a doula was or that birth photography was a thing. Now I find myself playing in glitter and rain puddles with my toddler by day and tiptoeing my way out of our shared bedroom by night to answer phone calls from soon-to-be parents. Seriously, this is the best job ever.

Becoming a birth doula wasn’t necessarily part of my career plans, but after hiring a doula for my own birth I realized the enormous potential for advocacy in birth work. It is my dream, my goal, my wish (although wish seems a little too passive doesn’t it?) that every woman feels supported in childbirth. Families deserve to feel heard, and they deserve respect. Not just from me, but from their doctors/midwives and society in general.

The birth photographer piece came a little later. I have loved photography since I got my hands on my first DSLR in high school. Back then, I was taking pictures of my friends and pretty flowers on my trips abroad. I offered to take some photos for my first few doula clients as a sort of extra gift. Since those first births, I have come to realize how incredibly important birth photography is for clients to process their births, so I love to incorporate it into my doula services.

These days, I live in a tiny, one-bedroom upstairs apartment where we squeeze all the love of our two dogs, a pint-sized toddler tornado and two adults. My husband and I are both from Upstate New York, and we moved back together as newlyweds and haven’t looked back. If you’re looking for relaxed and knowledgable birth support then shoot me a message and we can make it happen.

Much love,

Nichole Virag

I cannot say enough about this beautiful and talented woman. Her passion for birth, babies, moms and dads oozes out of her.

She was quick to meet my needs and thought of comfort measures I wouldn’t have thought of myself. I think she was also a huge asset to my partner, who was able to joke with her, look to her for guidance, and simply stay by my side while she took care of other things.

At 37 weeks we found out our baby was breech and decided to switch providers. She helped us through a lot of the stressful decisions involved in a breech baby and was very supportive.

From the moment Nichole walked in our door, we were confident that she was committed to helping us actualize the birth experience we were hoping for.

Nichole was always there with the right thing to say, to make me feel powerful when I had little control. She turned a very sterile environment into something so beautiful through the use of her photography prowess. I am truly blessed to have had Nichole by my side.

After our experience with Nichole, the first thing my husband says to anyone when we start to talk babies or birth is that they should work with a doula. We look forward to working with Nichole again in the future!
